I am a native Georgian, but spent most of my life in the Charleston area. Living in such an art-oriented community, it was easy for my art interest and talents to develop. I started studying art in the mid 70s and have studied with many famous artists such as Ralph Smith, Tony Couch, Alex Powers, Steven Jordan, Virginia Fouche Bolton, and Del Holt. I was a member of the Seagull Gallery in Mt. Pleasant, and the Courtyard Gallery in downtown Charleston. then for a short time I was a member of the Artists' Gallery in Jacksonville, Florida. I
joined Artists' Row in Augusta in the mid 90s and opened the Barbara Whetstone
Studio Gallery on Broad Street. After a brief relocation to Daniel Village and
then to Washington Road in the Augusta Business Center, I returned to Broad
street to start Broadstrokes, where I gathered together several other talented
local artists to join me in this gallery. I
enjoy painting in several mediums such as oil on canvas, watercolor, glass
paint, and linen paint. My subject matters vary from florals, to landscapes,
especially beach scenes, and local landmarks, but my recent success has been in
Pet Portraiture. I have been commissioned to paint murals in several public
areas such as the Aiken Vocational Rehabilitation Center and a restaurant in
North Augusta named B. C. Davenports, as well as many private homes in the CSRA.
Also for several Christmas seasons, I painted ornaments at the Dillards Home
Store. In 2007, I presented Augusta Mayor Deke Copenhaver with a painting of his
rescued Greyhound and Yellow Lab. I
now reside in Richmond County along the Savannah River with my husband, Dick
Fox. I have two grown daughters. One lives here in Augusta with her husband and
my teenage granddaughter, and my other daughter lives in Mt. Pleasant, SC with her
husband and my new baby granddaughter.
